The Hell With This Podcast #34 - Rumble Fish

Mark, Chad and guest Steve Phelan return after a week off to explore Steve's pick, "Rumble Fish", Francis Ford Coppola's generally forgotten art-house epic(?) from 1983.  Photographed on gorgeously lush black and white film, "Rumble Fish" is a film that most likely couldn't see the light of day in o...

Re: The Hell With This Podcast #33 - The Big Short

Boy there were some ugly shots in this movie. How do you shoot a goddess like Margot Robbie and have a bunch of shadows going across her face? Amateur. Otherwise pretty good flick. Yeah, this was not a pretty movie by any stretch. I mean, just look at the still I used. Looks like a movie that's com...

Re: Movie production campus coming to...Denver?

Not holding my breath...or even looking it in the eye...but this might be interesting. "A company with ties to Hollywood media production seeks to create a high-tech sound stage and film production center to anchor a 70-acre development in northern Douglas County." https://www.bizjournals.com/denve...

Thanks for confirming what I always knew - I'm the weak link of THWT! I knew it! All I had to do was not show up!

The Hell With This Podcast #33 - The Big Short

Ep.33 - "The Big Short" (2015) 2008 came and went with no really big issues, right?  Uhh, wrong.  Guest Brian Finifter and co-host Mark Heiliger take a look (minus Chad) at "The Big Short" (Mark's first time).  They ponder exactly what went wrong (with the economy - not the movie), and leave us with...

Caught Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets so the rest of you don't have to. Trust me on this.
Hmmm... Damn. (will probably walk into the fire anyway, because I'm a lemming)

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

Dunkirk was both good and flawed. Some bad logic and felt small in scope. 400,000 troops on the beach, but it only looked like 5,000. Editing and sound were awesome, as were the dogfighting sequences.

The Hell With This Podcast #32 - The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

With whispers that Terry Gilliam's ill-fated Don Quixote project might finally see the light of day, we thought we'd dive into another Gilliam film that almost didn't make it to screens: "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". With the passing of Heath Ledger - half way through production - Gilliam a...

I'm just going to leave this here: http://www.theofficialjohncarpenter.com/contact/ Looking at that list of representatives looming over him, I'm gonna go on a short limb to say there's no chance in hell he'd ever do our shitty little podcast. I did at least get a pleasant "no" out of Rian Johnson ...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

We ended up seeing Baby Driver. I really enjoyed it. It was different from what I expected from the only trailer I saw for it, but in a good way. Odd combination of surreal and graphic, but it worked. The acting was great as well. I really wanted to go see The Big Sick, but mostly just give it some...

Fantastic movie one of my favorites. What the hell is bent over the phone booth?

The Hell With This Podcast #31 - Prince of Darkness

Mark and Chad dive deep into John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" - a film which Chad is seeing for the first time.  They talk about their collective love of Carpenter's collected works and the sentimentality they feel for that "lost" brand of filmmaking.  Actually, it's kind of a depressing episod...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

I checked out The Void on Netflix. A very decent Lovecraftian horror movie with some bitchin' monsters. Felt a bit like they were making it up as they went along and a bit too much like Prince of Darkness, but it's still worth a watch. Lovecraft-inspired movies are hard enough to come by that I set...

Re: The Hell With This Podcast - Master List

Mark and I recorded two episodes these past two days. Updated the list! I should have Prince of Darkness up by end of day (assuming I can fix my current download speeds to download the audio from mark), and Parnassus will go up on Tuesday, which will get us effectively back on schedule at 32 weeks-i...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

Watched Wonder Woman, it was fine, don't quite get why people were acting like it was something new. Gadot and Pine are good and whilst the WWI setting was slightly different it was pretty much by the numbers. Pretty much how I felt. Wonder Woman is one of my favorite characters, mostly because I h...

My youngest was pretty upset at the ending. I mean she was mad, which made it even more potent for me having to explain how, as in life, it wasn't necessarily a sad ending.
This is amazing. This generally upbeat movie destroyed your child's world view.

Re: The Hell With This Podcast #30 - La la land

I read the IMDB trivia after we were done recording and learned all about the numerous references to other musicals. That kind of cleverness doesn't mean much to me because I haven't SEEN all those old musicals. So when a particular number is taking cues from The Umbrellas of Blahblahblah, that's w...

The Hell With This Podcast #30 - La la land

Pretty sure you've heard of this one before.  "The famous Oscar loser", as Mark puts it, gently.  But Mark's never seen it, and Chad has (too many times), so here we are.  Why tackle a movie that's hot off the press?  Well, maybe it's a half-hearted attempt to have a conversation about hype and how ...

Still loving it even after packing gear a mile up the trail and back. That tripod and head are not light. Dude! This! THIS! This is my film making role - pack mule! I rock at that shit! Lemme know if I can help! And, uh, if it pays... It's true - I've seen Mike haul a heavy ass tripod up and down a...
