It Follows

Chad introduced me to "It Follows" a few years ago, a film about a...creature? Entity? that follows the last person who had sex and, on a capture/kill of the last person to get lucky, follows the most recent person "biblically related" to the deceased. And on down the line. The Creature/Entity is in...

Can't wait for Natalie to say something like "oh my god, some creepo made a movie called 'sex, drugs and natalie portman' ages ago." At this point, hopefully that doesn't happen when we both (eventually) are working on the same film set. *cringe*
That would be a good short film.

ITT Moby dates Natalie Portman

...wait, what? ""I was surprised to hear that he characterized the very short time that I knew him as dating because my recollection is a much older man being creepy with me when I just had graduated high school," she said." Moby apologizes to Natalie Portman after claiming in his new book that they...

Re: ITT: Social Media

Social media reached the point where the signal-to-noise ratio just isn't acceptable to anybody who values their time. I'd kinda expect a resurgence in forums, but thoughtful discourse requires an attention span - where the lack of which I mostly blame the internet in general, not social media. Edit...

Re: The Hell With This Podcast #68 - "The Ice Pirates" (1984)

You each summed it beautifully in two separate sentence fragments put together: "You can do anything you want in the view of the lens and...this is what they chose to film" - "like, how cheesy and tacky it is." That's it. That's all there is to it. Anything more than that is overinterpretation, tryi...

"Idris Elba Just Explained Why Playing James Bond Is a Bad Idea" "Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it," he told the journalist Craig McLean. Re: Bond 25

Related note: I hope the score for "Shatterhand" is as strong as they were for "Quantum of Solace" (composer David Arnold) and "Skyfall" (Thomas Newman). I'm getting a lot more mileage out of the music than I have the actual films.

Re: Bond 25

I think "Shatterhand" could be brilliant, but it's more likely to be predictable. If the studio is going with a reasonably faithful rendition of "You Only Live Twice" (novel) - Bond is after Blofeld in The Garden of Death - coupled with elements of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - Irma Bunt kills...

Bond 25

A thread regaling us with the rumor and speculation surrounding the various Bond 25 announcements. A few of the posters work within industry, so it's an interesting read from a film production view, especially in the sprawling Bond franchise. 4,920 posts starting in May 2017... https://quarterdeck.c...

Re: Podcasts...

So now that Friends in Your Head is RIP and Nerdist only posts like one new podcast ever week now, I'm dying for some ear content while I work. I suppose I could go the audiobook route, but I'm sure I'd zone out from time to time. Come at me - what should I be listening to? Spybrary! "Spybrary is a...

Lockpicking in Real Life versus on the Screen

Video on...you guessed it. Taken during one of the hacker conferences, a panel and audience briefly dissect many lockpicking scenes as shown on both film and TV - mostly what was done wrong, a few things that were done right, and a few cool techniques for prop masters and DPs. At 55 minutes length i...

What turns a book into a good movie?

A friend and I were discussing authors, and Clive Cussler came up. We should both enjoy his work - globetrotting, adventure, etc - but it turns out we find him unreadable. However, we loved the movie "Sahara." What other authors are out there that suck, or are of limited talent, but somehow produce ...

Nice! I'm due to revisit the book, as it has been quite awhile...
It's definitely a faster read than "The Peripheral" though I'd consider both books to be complementary in terms of ideas.

Re: Sci-Fi novel recommendations

Work is ramping down, so I'm getting a lot more reading in - luxury beyond price! Chad gave me a copy of leGuin's "The Lathe of Heaven," soooo... Wow. Just wow. I need to revisit this one in the near future in order to fully absorb it. My first exposure to her work turned me off for some reason (and...

Re: Untitled Australian Roadtrip Movie

I do recall you saying stuff about the rest of the film being scripted on the fly (as an aside: has that ever been done for a feature-length before?) A bunch of examples Whoa. Leave it to the Germans for self-flagellation, so to speak. I've been delaying because I wanted to have a good edit togethe...

Re: Untitled Australian Roadtrip Movie

Just curious about the length of the prelude / Los Angeles scenes. I do recall you saying stuff about the rest of the film being scripted on the fly (as an aside: has that ever been done for a feature-length before?) as well as pretty significant sleep deprivation. With respect to the latter...at le...
