Re: Untitled Colorado Road Trip (2015)

If (a) is doable, I say do it. Make it artsy. Make it something we have to figure out / piece together as we go, in a good way. You can always do a couple of pickups with the star somewhere in California to fill in if you need more beats or whatever. Maybe shoot _one_ proper scene to come late in th...

Re: Star Wars - The Force Awakens

You know, not that this is specific to Star Wars, but: around the time of the prequels I was following the news heavily — spoiler-free, but by God I watched and rewatched every Internet trailer etc. etc., I followed casting news, I paid attention. This applied to any nerd movie with big press behind...

Re: Star Wars - The Force Awakens

I'm still undecided if I'm gonna see these flicks, but I give JJ credit for bringing much-needed attention to detail back to Star Wars—poise and polish. The prequels have the most bizarre ability to miss easy fixes, surface-level shit that wouldn't have required any great effort to make work any bet...

Re: Film Festivals

Correctamundo. Two more overarching bits of festival advice: (1): In general, early deadlines are cheaper, and in any case I prefer applying early on the theory that maybe it'll be better to be seen early than in a big pile of last-minute discs. I very rarely apply late, unless it's someplace I real...

Re: Film Festivals

Your flick doesn't fall into any particular niche, which makes it hard to recommend specific fests—there's no fest out there with a special category or special leaning toward what you've got. Which isn't a bad thing, it just means you're looking at submitting simply to quality all-around fests rathe...

Re: 201 days until the new X-Files mini-series...

I liked that show when it was a monster-of-the-week deal. When they started getting into conspiracies and arcs and complex storylines it got a little nutty for me.

Re: How to schedule a no-budget feature

Do yourself a favor and focus on one or two very good actors and write roles around THEM. I agree with this, though I do so for aesthetic reasons and not just practicalities. I write roles for people I know or for people I've seen in shows. Now, I'm in New York, I could throw a rock and hit twenty ...

Re: How to schedule a no-budget feature

I say think of it the other way around. Instead of trying to coordinate multiple actors for a few days each, find a couple of very committed actors and make the whole movie about them. People who really want to do it and are willing to give up multiple weekends. "Hard Candy" is 90% a two-person movi...

Dang, a feature on Red. What's your hard drive situation looking like?--what'd you take on the road, what've you got to edit, etc. etc.

Re: Best films (so far) of 2015?

Maybe this is just me and I know this would never happen but I'd love a Jurassic Park movie with no dinosaur antics, just a political thriller that explains how you go from the chaos at the end of the first movie to a operational dinosaur park that people actually go to. You're not alone. That woul...

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

I don't mind pitch pieces and whatever, things where it's just a few cooks stirring the broth and it's more like documentary than the fucking machine that is "real" reality TV. I do not aspire to work in that kind of environment. Sure, I know it's where the money is, but I think I'd rather get into ...

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

Whatever became of Pearblossom anyhoo? I am contractually entitled to a DVD copy of the movie! :p

Although at this point if it saves you money and aggravation you can send me a high-res H.264 QuickTime or something.

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

I had my first couple of paid screenwriting gigs this year--rewrites, mostly Carrie-Fishering the dialogue. One, a feature (!), might actually shoot. I won't say they're the best things I ever wrote, but I'm very proud to finally be making a few bucks for what I love doing best. Beyond that, my payi...

I certainly never received tapes. I don't think you sent tapes.

I am an editor (and a very fast one) if you're in need of editing and comfortable working remotely, but that is a separate discussion.

Re: Best films (so far) of 2014?

um… it's 2015 That said, my vote is for "It Follows". An exceptional and original film that creates a pervasive atmosphere of dread. No other movie this year has knocked me on my ass the way this one did. The kind of movie that makes you realize people are still making good stuff. I haven't seen Mad...

Re: Film Projects

I took 2014 off from making films because I just couldn't get together a script I liked. But I'm getting back into it. The project I wanted to do fell through because of actor unavailability. But this weekend I started putting together a backup that I will shoot at my half-sister's apartment this su...
