Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

Jackie — Possibly Nat-Nat's best work. I agree with Mahnola Dargis that "In some roles, Ms. Portman stiffens up and never seems to get out of her head" but only partially that "in "Jackie" this works as a character trait." Of course there is some value in her Jackie being a performer, always creatin...

Re: Our Top 10 films of 2016

It was in festivals in 2015.

I had this one-year-off trouble with "It Follows" as well.

Of course I'm always behind on movies no matter what, so :p

Re: Our Top 10 films of 2016

1. La La Land: Just pretty shots, what can I say… except that I literally cannot remember the last movie I saw with so many achingly pretty shots. 2. Weiner: A wonderfully candid peek behind the scenes of a train wreck that just keeps on wrecking itself. The faces of his campaign staff as they reali...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

It was in New York around the same time but is only slowly expanding. I was talking to my uncle this weekend and he said it wasn't getting to him in Michigan for a coupla weeks.

I liked La La Land a lot — possibly my favorite of the year just for pure prettiness.

Re: Star Wars - Rogue One

ROGUE ONE: A Spoiler Review When I was a young filmmaker learning the ropes, I made "Star Wars" spoofs. I was part of a community that made fan films—y'know, fan fiction in motion picture form. The legally gray area we were in didn't bother us, because we knew George Lucas and Lucasfilm didn't mind,...

Re: Star Wars - Rogue One

I was and am "eh, it had its moments" on TFA, but I dug "Rogue One" so much. A good movie on its own, a great one for all the fanboy treats it provides. Full review tomorrow. As usual with my long posts, you may need to set aside an hour or six.

Re: Chad & Mark's Untitled Podcast #2 - The Fabulous Stains

I am very glad you introduced me to this movie way back when. I enjoyed it a lot, for all its oddness.

The ending bit (Diane Lane's wonderful look to the sky just before we go to the music video) inspired the ending of a novel I'm still trying to get the publishing industry to show some love.

Re: "Colorado" - short film

Dang that's some pretty stuff. I love what you were able to get just with (I assume) natural light. I liked seeing some locations we don't see a lot of in movies, especially in indie films, which don't always boast the greatest geographic diversity  My favorite shots were the two back-to-back w...

Re: Upcoming Films Thread

As someone who missed The Fifth Element (one of my top ten movies) in theaters and has been kicking himself his whole life, I'm looking forward to this, I marked my calendar the day I heard the release date. I wonder if Valerian is better-known in Europe to the point that it helped justify the budge...

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

My feature edits: "Stay Cold, Stay Hungry" by our own Mr. Branco "Susie Q", a black-and-white homage to New Wave movies "The Graduá" (title may change), about a girl who moves home to the Bronx after being the first in her family to graduate college, hilarity ensues and the upcoming "Nia on Vacation...

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

Alas, my fourth feature is the only one to pay me so far.

Hoping for a fifth one of these days. I technically have one lined up on an if-we-make-it-the-gig-is-yours, but that's currently in the cross-your-fingers-it-happens-one-day stage, ha ha.

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

My first time seeing "Taxi Driver" I was a couple of years too young for it… but I'll never forget, I was REALLY impressed with one scene, I wanted to know who the actor was.

It was, of course, Scorsese himself. :D (Back then I didn't know what he looked or sounded like.)

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...

Good question. I haven't been called in in ages. The director is tinkering with it, I'm told, but I don't know if it's picture-locked yet. I thought we were in a pretty good place when I last worked on it a few months ago. Shit, the third feature I edited is still tinkering and it's been in festival...

Re: Star Wars - Rogue One

Before that, "The Worst Witch" was also adapted into a TV movie, wherein Tim Curry informed us that anything can happen on Halloween and gave several salient examples.

Re: Star Wars - Rogue One

I loved the new trailer. The things you know, but seen through new eyes. It's not the romantic Lucas blend of old movies and Joseph Campbell; it's taking the same toys and playing a whole different game with them. But, the real question: are we going to get a proper recreation of ANH Vader, with a p...

If you've ever seen "Elephant" by Gus Van Sant, now there's a movie about Columbine (not literally Columbine but you know), now that's something that's worth your time.

I am amazed that a well-meaning uplifting Christian movie was made about her before Cassie Bernall.

Re: TV: What are you currently watching?

My relatives who I house-sit for are away for a few weeks so I get to use their Netflix setup. I am really looking forward to "BoJack Horseman" which returns soon. Looks like I gotta add "Stranger Things" to my lineup, huh. I gave "Lady Dynamite" a try, I might give it another. I'm enjoying catching...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 FULL REVIEW (spoilers, to the extent that it matters) At 3 pm at the Kips Bay branch of the AMC Loews movie theater chain I witnessed… well, you know. Well, there's something you don't see every day. But let's not talk about "Ghostbusters" yet. Let's talk about "Batman". You see, I...
