Re: Sci-Fi novel recommendations

A couple End-of-the-World novels that were very well done. The technical acuity is sound. Daniel Suarez's "Daemon" and John Barnes's "Directive 51." Semi-spoilers ahead... Daemon: A mesh network near-AI is unleashed by using "an army of teen gamers to beta test the operating system of a new civiliza...

In case you didn't see it (I know it was forced upon some of you) - A title sequence I animated with a lovely guy called Lee Daniels for a computer game based TV show here in the UK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isiHO5KwgC4 Took about a month and I drew about 95% of the elements in Microsoft Pa...

Re: In this thread, we talk about...

I miss having an assistant. So when I'd say something like "Get me a box of kittens to kill," I'd be able to vent my anger and frustration without having to explain time away going to the pet store. To, you know, kill kittens. Wait, what? Where were we?

If by "on foot somewhere" you mean ensconced in the Iliad Bookshop, fucking around on the Monkey Island at the LA Zoo, or passed out in the shadow of the Hollywood sign, sure.

Re: TV: What are you currently watching?

I don't recall ever seeing the original movie, outside of a few things here and there. You? The guy who orders a very dry vodka martini at the Westworld bar ends up being hunted by Yul Brynner. Seems fitting. Things went awry at Westworld's parent company's other resorts, Medieval World and Roman W...

Wow. That was absolutely amazing. "Spectacular" is the only adjective that does it justice. Good call.

""And why were you in Tokyo?" "Bigend. He's after the maker of The Footage." She watches him take that one in. He's one of those people apparently immune to the lure of The Footage; in his case, she knows, it has to do with his being his own maker, with his own obsessive need to generate his own foo...

I thought you strung all that shit together, called it 'Colorado' and sent it off to Antarctica or Australia or Tasmania or some place where nobody lives.

Re: "The First Ten"

The Chad is introspective. Thank you for this. I've always found the series to be fascinating but have been missing "seven." The individual films, and their manner of release, reminds me of the art boxes in William Gibson's "Count Zero." It would be interesting if there were a narrative thread conne...

I'm trying to avoid a narrow focus, so we can just pitch that as "I'm really good at not dying." That way it encompasses all of my near-death experiences.

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

I often state without irony that if you read Sidney Lumet's "Making Movies" and watch "12 Angry Men", "Network" and "Dog Day Afternoon", you've had a one-day film school right there. I watched "12 Angry Men" carefully before attempting my film "The Caddywhompus Years" which takes place largely in o...

Re: The "I just watched a movie" thread

Well, I don't know about "what makes a good movie good" Agreed, and despite that being exactly what I said it wasn't what I meant. Backing up the thought process a moment, I should rephrase that as "identifying elements in a movie which I enjoy," which doesn't even begin to resemble my first autist...

stuff that was, to me, insightful. stuff that was, to me, insightful. I really enjoy other people's educated perspective on what is actually going on in a screenplay and what makes a good movie good, whereas to my untrained eye a good movie is one where I didn't look at my watch more than a couple ...

My survivalist instincts in LA are an all-time-low. I kinda just figure that in case of emergency, I'm just fucked. Prepare to improve your quality of life for more likely scenarios. You can prepare for job loss. You can prepare for a power outage at work. You can prepare for an extended power outa...

Re: Podcasts...

I've never really done podcasts before, but I've been listening to Writing Excuses a lot lately. It's a 15 min cast once a week geared toward fiction writers (mostly sci-fi/fantasy) , so I don't know if anyone else here would even be interested, but lots of good writing advice. Very interested!
