The Hell With This Podcast #75 - "Under The Silver Lake" (2018)

Post by Chad Peter » Sat Dec 28, 2019 2:56 pm

Ep. 75 - "Under The Silver Lake" (2018)

Is the sophomore slump a real thing?  Can our 75th episode count as a sophomore effort?  Mark and Chad devolve back into opening an episode with a quick discussion about STAR WARS - only they could derail their own podcast by discussing a topic that has nothing to do with their choice of "movie of the week".

On topic now: David Robert Mitchell made his mark with a fan favorite of ours "It Follows" - and this follow-up had us waiting with some excitement... but then it kinda disappeared from view for about a year.  A24 picked it up and there were rumors of a re-edit occurring, but from what we gathered that re-edit never happened.  This week Chad revisits the film, while Mark has yet to see it.

Performers of note: Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Riki Lindhome, Topher Grace, Zosia Mamet, Jimmi Simpson, Grace Van Patten.

I've not seen Under The Silver Lake but I stuck this on to hear what you thought of Star Wars, anyway...

DUNE IS SO DULL.

Gods no. They're only doing the first and dullest half of the damn book.

Yes, I'll end up watching it.

Alright, that was an interesting jaunt into the obscure. I enjoyed it. The retro score was well used. Now to listen to this Star Wars discussion. Hope there's no spoilers.

I don't know if it was by design, but none of the story lines actually come to fruition. The dog killer, the owl lady, the whale thing...really the only thing that was referred to that actually came back into play was the secret map. Even the main characters journey just fizzles to an end with no real meaning?

That was my thinking as well, although I wouldn't put it past this director to have placed it SOMEWHERE in the film. When A24 said they'd give the director extra time to completely rework the edit (which never happened), I took it as maybe he never got to finish those pieces of the puzzle, since this film was pretty rushed to completion, on the heels of IT FOLLOWS. I guess we'll never know, because A24 gave him a year and nothing came of it.

*shrug*

Probably better to move on and see what else this kid makes. IT FOLLOWS was great and this was at least enjoyable, so maybe just maybe the next film will be solid.

Was it not implied that the lead character was the dog killer?

I dunno - WAS IT? I think I saw it as implied, but I took that as a mislead...

On the first run through I took "Dog" as a metaphor for emotional attachments and "the dog killer" is not so much a person but a set of circumstances or state of mind. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it fit for me. I'm going to give it another watch to see what I can glean from the whole thing. There's a lot to unpack.
