In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...
Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...
I am a member of the IATSE Local 728 Hollywood Motion Picture Electricians. Which means I pick up heavy lights and plug them in.
I'm a dayplayer, so I don't work on any one thing every day, but recently I've done a lot of work on Bones, Revenge, and HBO's Togetherness.
It's hard on your body and the hours can be rough, but it's a pretty sweet gig. Low stress, low responsibility, good food.
Of course, I want to no longer be doing it as soon as I can, but there are worse jobs certainly.

Wow reading through all of this we really have grown up. Acting wise just unpaid small fun skits. But I've been editing News for years now. Shot and chopped a doc that Chad told me was really long. But in a good way. Everything else is short film. Fun but not much in terms of the dollars. Also I'm doing this mostly from my iPhone so I haven't updated my avatar. Lol.

I find it so weird to apply for work saying how I've been using After Effects for over ten years. They don't know I was 17!

Also, didn't know about "Togetherness". I still need to watch that show. How's Mark Duplass?Lank wrote:I am a member of the IATSE Local 728 Hollywood Motion Picture Electricians. Which means I pick up heavy lights and plug them in.

I need to watch it too. Looks good!
Mark (and Jay) Duplass were pretty cool. Very chill. No interesting stories to report. Although once I took a glance at Mark's twitter and saw several "no one is listening" posts, but he's so all over the place he could've been talking about executives or another project entirely.
Jay looked tired as fuck by the final week.

Hah, I bet. Those fucking guys are gonna burn out if they're not careful. Maybe I'll check it out this week - I hear it's a short first season (Tyler watched the ENTIRE season in one NYC to LA flight.

Well, I started out in Post Production back in 1999, then left Film/TV for a couple of years to go work at EA (easy job and hated the guy I was working for, so EA seemed like an easy out). Went back to editing around 2002, same company, but the guy I hated had left. Worked my way up to Senior Editor/Producer and pretty much ended up running the company, but wasn't getting the paycheck.
I left and set up my own Production Company in 2009 with a couple of guys I knew, and have been doing that ever since - still based at Pinewood Studios. A lot of corporate and brand films, but peppered with our own creative bits and pieces. We ended up buying the company I used to work for and are in the process of setting it up as a specialist Aerial Cinematography/Photography company (we own a couple of drones and I'm licensed to fly them commercially).
We now have a comedy spinoff and a film spin off from the company and we're about to embark on a fundraising adventure to raise cash to expand the business and get a budget (tax efficiently of course) for our first feature (an indie horror).
Still don't get enough time to spend with my wife, or my playstation..

Also, excited to see what you do with the feature production end of things. Don't fuck it up.

I've also fallen into a VFX day job. I soon start my second season doing cleanup work on an Amazon Prime children's show called Tumble Leaf. It's all stop motion, which is a lot of fun since I'm a sucker for animation. My friend got me a temp gig in the VFX room last year and I have a proper contract starting next month for the rest of season 2.
My buddies and I are pitching our own stop motion show to the company that produces Tumble Leaf. We're hoping to have a teaser animated by the end of the year.
Beyond that, I also huck lights for a living, though without the prestige of 728.

Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...
Seems everyone I know who has been financially "successful" (meaning: surviving in LA), went into POST production (VFX, editing or otherwise). Lank is the only LA-based production person who came from 2k (that I know of) that is surviving on doing production alone (in LA). Obviously Branco is doing pretty well on the other side of the states.
Re: In which we discuss the things for which we are paid...
I'm making a living in retail management (walmart). Passed up the film dream to start a family. Now married (which I think may have happened before this place went into a coma), and have 2 little dudes keeping me busy outside of work. If you have me on fb, I'm sure you've seen them (if you don't have me on fb, why the hell not? Even Tony added me!).
However my best friend is paying me half a g to edit his book, so I'm kind of getting paid for something creative. Hopefully some of my writing projects pull in a few bucks. My hope is to be writing and/or editing full time in 10 years.

Side note, it's funny to me that the only 2k'ers I see on fb regularly are Nic (strongly atheist) and Tony (devout christian). Every year or so I see Chad post something.

Oh, hey!
I am living in Virginia now, spent about 3 years living in Hawaii prior to that. I am an intelligence analyst in the Air Force.
My wife and I now have 4 daughters (ranging from 9 to 2), and the younger two especially enjoy watching Tumble Leaf.
Haven't done anything film wise in quite some time.
