ITT: We cheat on NP2k

ITT: We cheat on NP2k

Post by Chad Peter » Tue Oct 03, 2017 4:01 pm

So there's gotta be other forums ya'll have frequented over the years. Some forums have died off, and others have not... others have come back from the dead (ahem). Where else do ya'll read up?

me...

Generally frequent:
np2k.com - of course
rcjohnso.com - Been on director Rian Johnson's forum for nearly a decade now (actually... might be over a decade now). Been fun to interact with him and see him blossom from "Brick" to "Brothers Bloom" to "Looper" to fucking "Star Wars Episode IX". Definitely took some notes along the way.

Occasional checkups:
friendsinyourhead.com - although I've never really kept up with topic discussion, mostly because I don't know who most of the users are (I'm lazy)
Various NFL forums - the meathead in me likes to see how the other side thinks. Usually, if I want a sample of how middle america thinks, I go visit any various forum of any NFL team. Mostly it reminds me how dumb the general public is.

Retired:
theforce.net forums - RIP.
imdb.com forums - RIP.

Sad to say that's about it.

Pretty much exclusively Reddit these days. I don't even browse facebook or twitter anymore because it was raising my anxiety.
I used to go on 4chan a lot but the main board became unbearable, the tv and movies page was full of intentional spoilers, and I gave up internet porn a while back, so I no longer had reason to visit. The 4chan page of Reddit pretty much has anything worth seeing anyway.

Reddit. That's about it. And I read a lot of Twitter, but I don't have, like, a million e-friendships there. I also read the comment threads at Birth Movies Death, but I don't post (I don't even have an account)—still, lot of actual decent discussion there.

I got de-modded from TFN for not showing up any more. I deserved it. I take responsibility. Sadly, between YouTube and the end of prequel fever, the old fan films forum just lost its audience and activity and never came roaring back, and I don't know what I could have done to foster engagement.

I still sometimes visit the Something Awful forums, but it's been going downhill for years. It used to be a wellspring of comedy and creativity. It was a very good place for me both for fun and career-building; TGOL would never have taken off without it. But it just doesn't have the spark it used to.

I like to think I learned to argue / debate from forums… I honed my comic chops there… I made friends and collaborators, lest we forget.

I guess kids these days are doing it more on 'open' places like Tumblr and Twitter, rather than at special boards set up for their topic of choice.

I live in a college district and like going out because, that way, I meet a lot more college girls.

You guys are my only e-friends.
Most of what I do on the internet is look up design references, research some arbitrary subject, or Netflix.

Fucking riot!

After TFN I split my time between FriendsInYourHead and here. Teague and co did an amazing job of building a community from all sorts of different corners rather than just displaced fan film forumers.

In the last year, I've taken to reading Reddit but it's very difficult to have an actual conversation on those crowded places. Same with most facebook groups.

I check this forum about once a day or so. Sometimes I post something, most times I don't.

Other than that, nada. I do a lot of Facebooking though, although I don't post so much as just read other people's stuff. I don't do the Twitter at all.

TF.N is still a thing? I thought it ended years ago.

Reddit.
I've never been long enough to really see its use as a social media platform. This is more of a flaw in me than Reddit, most assuredly.

Did it ever "come back", even remotely? I haven't checked in awhile.

Yikes. I'm now going to check your freezer for frozen human heads.

I'm still not entirely sure how 2k got its current userbase. NP2k was originally started by a guy named Aaron J. Rich from idaho (who has a cameo in "Drugs")... but the site was originally 100% a Natalie Portman fansite & forum. Fun fact, np2k.com USED TO be the #1 google search result for "natalie portman". I joined the forums in 1999 to promote my student flick "Sex, Drugs & Natalie Portman", and quickly made a few friends on the forum. In 2002, Aaron was going to close down the site (Yes, Attack of the Clones was THAT bad), but I asked for the keys and he gave me the domain. I promptly dropped the fansite bit and gradually shifted it over to a filmmaking site (kinda?) - I'm guessing that "Drugs" and the film festivals lured you TF.N'ers over here, but I honestly can't remember. The fact that all this started 18 years ago makes me sick.

Much easier, but where else but IRL can you come back with stories about date-nights with absolutely insane latinas?

"Drugs"
Heh, I just recently unearthed my burned copy of "Drugs" from back in the day.

Still think we need to plan a 20-year blowout/shindig/meetup/party/something.

I'm down. I'm always up to plan for something we'll all ultimately flake on two years from now.

Indeed this. But the excitement is in the anticipation.

Tell you what. Come January of every year, I will be in a bar in Park City during Sundance having a drink. Any and all of you are welcome to join me.

With a little luck, I'll be back there a few more times over the years. My personal rule was to never attend Sundance unless I had something to do with a film that went thru there. Last year, both Eric, myself and my friend Liana all had films there - hopefully the trend continues! Although I don't think I'll be there for next year's at this point.

My current work situation has placed me within earshot of some very very very Sundance-successful producers. I've always had a hunch it was a "who you know" festival (as opposed to a "how good is your film" festival), but I hadn't ever had anything substantive to base that claim on (until now). Listening to these guys make calls to Sundance people sight-unseen, and basically guaranteeing acceptance into the festival, based on actor attachments alone, makes me want to puke. It's just a joke and a complete con-job on the thousands of less fortunate filmmakers that bust their asses day in and day out to produce quality films with next to no studio support. It's the broke-ass filmmakers that line these guys' pockets.

It didn't used to be that way. Redford has publicly stated in the past that he's sad about the commercialization of Sundance. It is a very much "who you know" festival now. It has turned into a popularity celebrity circus, and that sucks.

Having said that, there are still opportunities for broke-ass filmmakers to score there. I've personally seen it happen. If you're one of the lucky ones, then your film and you are on one of the biggest stages in the world, and everyone will know who you are in the aftermath.

It's still worth going. Especially for me as a local, because I LOVE film and I LOVE the types of indie films that I see there. I don't give a shit about celebrities, so I gravitate toward the smaller films and especially the shorts and documentaries. Also, I just love it for the ambience.
