What turns a book into a good movie?

A friend and I were discussing authors, and Clive Cussler came up. We should both enjoy his work - globetrotting, adventure, etc - but it turns out we find him unreadable. However, we loved the movie "Sahara."

What other authors are out there that suck, or are of limited talent, but somehow produce stories that translate exceptionally well to film? And what turns a mediocre book into a great movie?

I hate to say it, but Ian Fleming, Sure the Bond novels are fun but they are not "People will still be reading these in fifty years" fun like the movies.
