Could be fan films or student films or whatever, let's see them!

Oh man. This could take some thinking. Honestly, that one we had in a 2k fest awhile back where the girl wakes up with her arm trapped under some dude (in a mask, before she cuts her own arm off to escape)... that was probably one of my top five. lol. And didn't someone rip that off recently?

As for Fan Films... I don't think I saw any SHORT films that I absolutely loved, but "The Formula" is still my favorite long-form short film, if there is such a category.

I remember seeing that on TFN when the copycat film was released, it was very well done.

Lately, I've been fancying doing another short film and there was a time when I had an encyclopedic knowledge of a tonne of shorts but lately I'm struggling to think of more than a handful. I've literally forgotten more short films than most will ever know.

I've got it on a random CD-R somewhere. Along with all your other short films you've tried to bury.

The Jug Movie is definitely an all-time favourite.

My favorites:

"One Froggy Evening" — https://vimeo.com/21117324 (sorry for the out of sync upload, it's what I could find) — As funny and true as you've heard.

"Lily and Jim" — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDt-Fz0PLvk — Not Don Hertzfeldt's most famous, but one I'll always adore. And yes, I've surely ripped it off a time or two…

"Passionless Moments" — https://www.nzonscreen.com/title/passio ... ments-1983 — From Jane Campion and perhaps not what you would expect from her.

"the Scared is scared" — https://vimeo.com/58659769 — Young woman makes a movie of a story a six-year-old kid makes up.

"Adventures & Apathy" — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrr1z2WoKWQ — This was made by high school kids. I saw it at a festival with an audience vote and gave it my vote instead of my own film. No, it's nothing you haven't seen before, but it shows a certain sophistication and humor. I wish my own high school output had been one-tenth this strong. Reminds me a bit of "Juno".

"Kosher" — No link, I saw it on a DVD that came with a shorts screenwriting book. It's a very cute little movie about a little Jewish boy who wants to marry his playground sweetheart, but she's Christian. It ends exactly as it should.

"Shoebox Redhead" — https://vimeo.com/32890009 — I saw this at the Coney Island Film Festival. This director, Matthew Lawrence (not the actor by that name) is a real talent who sees the world his own way, I've seen and enjoyed some of his other stuff.

"Trapped Girl" https://vimeo.com/catherinefordham/trappedgirl — Another Coney Island Film Festival find, this one in the misadventures-of-a-young-woman-in-New-York genre, you know I love that shit.

"Hello" https://vimeo.com/199544295 — Another Coney Island Film Festival find, a ghost story.

"Killing the Coat" https://vimeo.com/182431224 — I saw this at two different festivals (actually two and a half because once it got played an extra half time by accident) and in all occasions it had the audience roaring.

"Keep On Keepin' On" — No link. I have only seen this film once, at my college film festival. It is not online. It is not on IMDB. I don't know who the director is. It was not made by someone at my college. It is fantastic. I ripped off the Listerine countdown in "Sparky" from this (it was a guy waiting for his microwave dinner to microwave). I think about this short so often. I loved it. It's a bit of a white whale for me.

———

The short you're referring to with the arm cut off was "The Morning After" by Daniel Knight. But what's this I'm hearing about a copycat? (Or was Knight's film the copycat? now I'm confused)

I actually forgot about this film that I DP'd - it's not my favorite by any means, and I'm pretty sure it's not good. I wasn't happy with how they color-treated the film...
